There are a lot of different devices of GPS for kids. Despite this variety, there are two main types. The first main type is a GPS tracker for kids. This does exactly what you might think it does given its name. It tracks kids with the power of GPS. The second type is a navigation, or mapping, GPS that can be used by kids for the purpose of geocaching. Both have their place in the life of a child.

GPS Tracking for Kids

GPS tracking is a technical term that describes two different types of tracking. The first type goes in in real time and is what most people want and think about when they think about GPS tracking. This is because they envision, as a parent, being able to know where their child is at any moment. This type of functionality can only be achieved with a device that is going to be communicate information in real time. When emergencies happen, a data logger is just not going to cut it.

The second type of GPS tracker for kids is a data logger. A data logger is simply going to record the device’s position at specified intervals into the devices hard drive. Once there, a user must download the information using some software to make sense of the data. Unless you physically have possession of the device you will not be able to access the data contained therein. This makes these devices good for long-term covert tracking, just not kid tracking.

Of the real time GPS tracking devices for kids there are again three main types. The first is the GPS tracking watch. These are small wrist watch devices that have a GPS receiver and a way to transmit the data converted by the receiver. This method of transmission is usually via a cell phone modem.

Watches are certainly very good in concept, but there has not really been an excellent implementation of them in the real world. Watches are just too small to fit all the components in a way that allows for both GPS components and the “cell phone” components. Today, most watches are bulky and simply not good investments for parents looking for a way to track their kid.

Another type of real time tracker for kids is a stand-alone tracking device for kids. Commonly referred to as child locators, these device are probably your best bet right now if you are going for dependability, concealability, and ease of use. For example, one device named the Amber Alert GPS is an astounding 1.77″ x 1.68″ x.78″ in dimension. That is extremely small and can be easily concealed on even the smallest child.

A device like this is also going to provide you with laser like precision when it comes to locating your kid. By utilizing both the Global Positioning System as well as tapping into land-based cell phone networks this device is able to establish its position to within a few feet. This is called A-GPS and makes it much more effective and useful for users.

Another advantage to using a child locator is that they generally come out of the box ready to go. You don’t have to worry about downloading any additional software, you just charge the battery and start tracking your child. This makes it great for someone who might not be that tech savvy – all you need to know is how to navigate on a webpage.

There is one major downside to using a locator like this. Generally speaking, they have a short battery life. A short battery life is not something that you want to fun into when you need your tracker the most. When your child actually needs the tracker you want them to have ample battery power, but the truth is that a lot of these devices only have a few hours of life when they transmit position data at a steady pace. You need to keep the batteries charged and you have to keep up with it or your device could be useless just when you need it most.

The final type of real time GPS tracker for kids is a kids cell phone. Almost all of today’s cell phones have some sort of positioning capability, most of which is going to be GPS. As a result, a kids cell phone, which is specifically designed for kids, is going have this in it as well. What makes the cell phone useful for a child is that it only has a few buttons that can be set on speed dial so the cell phone can never be abused by your child.

This provides excellent GPS tracking, but is not necessarily that great for concealment. Most attackers will get rid of a child’s cell phone right away because they know they can be used to contact their parents or by police to track them. Other than that, GPS cell phones work great.

Mapping and Navigation GPS

The second type of GPS that kids are probably going to use is for geocaching. This is a good thing for kids to be doing because it is a lot like a treasure hunt, making it a lot of fun for them. The map in this treasure hunt is the GPS and the treasure that you are searching for is called a cache. In order to find some of these caches you can go to an online database and download the coordinates to your GPS. This is a good way for kids to get outside and enjoy some exercise in the great outdoors. They should probably have a parent with them in case their geocaching takes them far and afield in the quest for their next cache.

Finding the right GPS for kids that you are looking for is not that hard. If you are looking for a real time tracker then you should be sure that you make sure that that is the device that you are purchasing from the retailer. Ask questions and find out what you are buying. Questions are the best way to ensure that you are buying the ride kids GPS for you and your child.
