It doesn’t fail, almost every first world country has it setup as a system.
Unless of course you view treatment of the poorer people a failure.
The benefit to not treating a lot of people, is faster care for the wealthy.
If you don’t want to have universal health care, the government can step in and price fix medical procedures like they do in japan. It works okay for them. They can afford adequate medical treatment because the government forces it to be affordable, and the same prices in rural as in urban areas.
The real problem with our system, coming from someone who has an entire family in medicine (Doctors, surgeons, nurses)…is the insurance companies. They buffer every side. The doctors, the hospital, the patients, everyone has to get insurance, and they are the ones forcing prices higher and higher.
The Doctors and the insurance companies are not going to like this

Every other developed nation has some form of universal health care. On average they spend half what we do per capita on health care and produce significantly healthier populations (among developed nations the US ranks last for life expectancy, second last for healthy life expectancy and last for child mortality).
The suggestion that something utilised to different degress in every other comparable nation, that consistently produces better results for cheaper than our system, could not work in America is insulting to Americans.
Yes, we do need Universal Health Care. Sick people need to concentrate on getting well – not battling insurance companies, health care industries or going medically bankrupt.
So we need the following:
A public policy that all Americans have affordable health care.
A “core” benefits package for all.
Guaranteed financial protection against very high health care costs.
Development of integrated community health networks.
More intensive efforts to improve quality of care and efficiency.
New ways to provide and finance palliative care, hospice and other services so people living with advanced incurable conditions have access to them in the environment they choose.
Now let’s GET GOING!
